Would true in-depth knowledge of our various societies help build tolerance?

Example: VisitBritain, the UK’s government sponsored tourism agency is providing tips on how to greet people from abroad during their hosting of the 2012 Olympics. Just a few are:
1.Indians may seem noisy & impatient, the behaviors of living in chaotic cities.
2.Never pour a glass of wine for an Argentine backward, a sign of hostility.
3.Avoid winking at a Hone Kong visitor.
4.Never call a Canadian an American.
5.With Mexicans, don’t bring up the 1840s U.S. Mexico war or undocumented immigrants.
6.Asian cultures discourage showing emotion in daily life.
7.Of all the people in the world, U.S. dwellers are probably the easiest to converse with and they don’t care when one has limited language skills. U.S. folks are easygoing and even smile at people they don’t know.

Hard to say given that whenever religion poisons a person’s attitude, it directly affects how they view strangers unless those strangers happen to practice the same regressive religious fantasy projection that they do themselves.

Religious tolerance almost always means, blanket one-way tolerance for one religion with no reciprocal tolerance for another religion or POV expected or tolerated in kind.

It’s differences that create boundaries to understanding, religious obsessed attitudes create artificial barriers to understanding as people are pigeon-holed or stereotyped as being bad before they open their mouth, guilt by association, even appearances can be deceiving, people have a tendency depending on how many cultural biases they adopt, to assume the worst things about other people when they hold regressive attitudes which most fundamentalist religions demand from their followers.

Building tolerance in any climate has many obstacles to overcome before the first step can be taken.

The hardest obstacle to overcome is the very notion of agreeing that all people deserve to be treated fairly with human dignity as a leading principle.

Get past this obstacle, and maybe, you have a chance to make progress on cultural tolerance, but somewhere, there are always religious absolutists who refuse to tolerate other people who do not obey their religion or accept their self-appointed dominance using the absurdity of religious authority as the source of their self-appointed religious totalitarianism.
