Will azalea bushes survive if planted in the “half” wine barrel planters in zone 5?

Even though they are quite large planters I have heard 3 conflicting theories. They are 3 year old plants which were transferred from one gallon pots bought at a local nursery
.
1) I’ve been told that azaleas will only last one or two seasons regardless in any size planter.

2) I’ve heard they will survive in large planters as long as the soil, sun and water requirements are met and that they are wrapped in burlap with some sort of insulation during the winter months.

3) I’ve heard that they will be fine in the barrel planters as long as the soil, sun and water requirements are met. Not needing any winterizing.

Hi. Winters in a zone 5 can be unpredictably cold and warm, so plants like azaleas could have it rough.

In containers, you are adding in another factor. The freeze thaw will kill the roots, not to mention winter desiccation….
Wrapping them is an option, but you are still dealing with the same issues. .

You may have 1 winter where the plant survives okay, then the next will wipe it out. If you really want to have azaleas in containers, I would consider moving them indoors during the winter.
