What is involved in buying wine by the case?

I’m thinking of buying my wife a case of wine as a present. I’m somewhat knowledgeable about wine, but haven’t ever bought it by the case before. Is this something my local liquor store could order for me? Is it possible to buy a mixed case? If so, would I get to choose what kinds?

With regard to cost, how much would it cost on average (in US dollars)? Is it cheaper to buy by the case, or not really?

And lastly, how many bottles are in a case?

Thanks.

Just money and a request would be involved. You can’t normally buy a case of mixed wine. The manufacturer generally puts 12 bottles of the same type of wine in a case. If you wanted a mixture you would probably be paying the shelf price per bottle. In British Columbia where I live, the Government liquor stores don’t give you a break on quantity purchases, however, some of the privately owned beer and wine stores will. But their prices are usually higher to start with. In the USA I noticed that private liquor stores offer deals and have sales on featured items. As for price, that depends on the quality of the wine. Almost impossible to give an exact answer on that point.
