When you taste and sample wine, do you really smell and detect all those odd things connoisseurs detect?

I read a sample description of a wine bottle and it talked of a “smoky bouquet of cherries and yams”, and hints of “chocolate” and plum. Sorry, but it’s all just sour grapes to my peasant tongue…

I don’t usually taste what they tell me I’ll taste, but I think that people probably do. The reason I think that is I saw something on TV where they tested a guy’s ability to tell one wine from another and to detect “good” wine compared to “bad” wine. He was able to do it, so that tells me there must be some way. Heh. But yeah, I just buy $10 stuff and call it good.
