“The Crystal Goblet” (By Beatrice Warde) – Is it relevant to modern Graphic Design?

I’m looking for general opinions for a research project I am currently undertaking.

If your a fellow designer, illustrator or something similar, you may appreciate this passage. If you aren’t that’s fine to! :)

My question is, what, in your opinion, was Beatrice Warde trying to say in the following passage and is her thoughts on Design still relevant today?

(Full Excerpt)

#First Paragraph#
“Imagine that you have before you a flagon of wine. You have two goblets before you. One is of solid gold, wrought in the most exquisite patterns. The other is of crystal-clear glass, thin as a bubble, and as transparent. Pour and drink; and according to your choice of goblet, I shall know whether or not you are a connoisseur of wine.”

Thanks for your time :)
Fixed the URL to the Passage :)

Well she’s trying to say “less is more,” in this case, it’s more about practicality. Someone that appreciates wine needs to see it through glass to judge its quality. A design that is not harmonious with a needed purpose is not a good design.
