purple wine glasses
I want to purchase some wine….?

Ok, so this may sound silly but I am not familiar with the different types of wines. It is a bit overwhelming at the store. When I watch tv, movies etc, the people typically have a big glass of purple wine ( like on Bachelorette). Anyways, I want to purchase some wine and don’t know wht type is best for me. I like sweet flavors. :)
thanks!!

It all depends on your budget. Usually the mainstream wines are a bit more expensive.

Good wine stores are usually your best bet for value. Find a large store with good customer service. Grocery stores tend to be more expensive but there are exceptions.

If you want to spend less than $15 go for white from Spain, Italy, or southern France (Rhone). Ask for a recommendation. There are some pretty delicious options there for under $10.

You will pay more for a good red. As a new wine drinker, you will probably enjoy the more fruity wines which are approachable now. Spanish wines are your best bet, followed by the wines of southern France (Rhone). You can get some bargains in the $10-15 range.

Shop around and ask for advice…with wine you pay a lot for the name (producer or grape). Also, you probably want to focus on wines that are ready to drink TODAY. You can get tasty wine from Bordeaux, for example, but you will need to hold it for 5 years before your mouth doesn’t pucker up when you drink it! :)

California wines are good but they tend to be overpriced for what they are.

The biggest rule of wine drinking is that the best wine is the one you like to drink. Price, pedigree, and all that don’t matter.

When you deal with people at the wine store, state your price range. Don’t be shy, remember you’re the customer. If you’re on a budget and want to come across like you aren’t, just say that you are looking for an “everyday” wine or a “table” wine. :)

Cheers.

PS Just to add–if you like wines with a little bit of sweetness, go for a German Reisling. They are whites and very affordable. Again, find a good store and get advice!
