sweet wine
is white wine different from sweet white wine?

I bought sweet white wine as i couldn’t find any other white wine in the store. can i use sweet wine in my recipes that calls for white wine?

Thanks
the bottle says sweet cooking rice wine. I am still wondering if it’s the same as i have never cooked with white wine or any wine before.

Definitely don’t use Sweet Cooking Rice Wine in any recipe that calls for white wine – it’s not the same thing, not used for the same effect. Not even made from grapes – as the name implies it’s made from rice, and tastes more like Sake.

Rice wine is used for flavoring Chinese and japanese foods and has a pretty strong flavor. Your recipe was probably looking for a dry white wine to complement the flavor of the dish. Like some of the others said, I’d never use a “cooking” wine; I’d never use anything that I wouldn’t drink myself – and cooking wines are usually full of extra ingredients and preservatives. Ewwwww…

Look for a good all purpose wine that’s not too dry or too sweet (or too expensive) – something like a California Sauvignon Blanc.
