What would be something fun to do in southern california?

I’m visiting my dad in august and i wanted to surprise him for a day and plan something. I thought about doing the temecula wine tour but its going to be so hot in august. Anyone have any ideas on what we could do?
My dad is in his 50′s and lives in Cali, so the beach is too simple. I want to do something special but not overly expensive.

Yes August will be hot. I would think about heading to the coast. Maybe Newport or Laguna. Maybe even take the Catalina flier over to Catalina for the day.
