Murder Mystery Birthday Party theme? I need ideas!?

My birthday is a few months away, but I am brainstorming for some ideas. I’d like to do a Murder Mystery theme. I know Target has a “party in a box” Murder Mystery/Wine kit, but I also don’t want it to be too cheesy. I really need some ideas! On top of that, my husband’s birthday is two weeks after mine. Normally, we just celebrate them on the same day because of how far our families are. We hate to have them travel twice. However, this year, I really want to honor him seperately. I think he deserves his own day. He will be turning 34. Any ideas on what I can do fro him? He is a huge hockey fan – maybe a hockey themed dinner?

1. know that at some level its going to be cheesy, no matter what. the point of these things is to have FUN.
2. buy a kit, but get your own wine.
3. read through the entire kit. buy one item for each guest/character (wig, lipstick, polo shirt, prop whatever) or encourage them to come dressed in character.
4. plan your meal in ‘courses’ to allow time for each stage of the game to develop.
5. make sure to keep you guests well hydrated (read: 2 bottles of wine per guest per 2 hours). mix it up by having reds, whites, sweets (ice wines or Rieslings) as well as sparking wines/champagnes (if you’re on a budget mixing a cheap spumante with redbull and floating white grapes in it is delicious and classy looking).

1. why not rent out the local ice skating rink?
2. have all your guests come in hockey jerseys
3. work hockey equipment into the serving arrangements
4. have stadium/rink food
5. arrange a hockey game between your guests.
