Do you know how to make ice?

I’m throwing a casual wine tasting party. I need a way to display and cool several open wine bottles at once. I could use buckets, but I’d prefer something a little more decorative. I’d love to create “milk carton” ice blocks with wine bottle sized holes. Can you think of creative way’s to create this type of display.

Sounds like a great original idea. I’d imagine the execution would go something like this:

1) Collect a group of milk cartons. Clean them, and cut the tops off so they are the height you desire.

2) Fill the milk cartons with water, leaving enough room at the top so they do not overflow once some water is displaced by the added volume of the wine bottle is step 4.

3) Slather the outside of an empty wine bottle that is the same size or slightly larger of the ones you will have at your wine party with an oil-based lubricant (Vaseline is cheap and handy). I’m thinking you’ll need to “grease” the empty bottle so that it will slip out of the ice casing easily and allow you to insert your full bottles for the party.

4) Place the empty, greased wine bottle in the water, in the center of the milk carton.

5) Freeze.

6)Hopefully once everything is set, the empty bottle will slide right out. You should be able to peel the milk carton off the exterior of the ice casing, and should be left with a tall, rectangular block of ice with a deep impression in the center to hold your wine.

Let me know how it turns out!
