Chardonnay

Chardonnay is the best selling white wine in Europe and the USA as it is very popular with casual wine drinkers or those who are just looking to start drinking wine. One of the factors that makes Chardonnay so popular is the price. Wine merchants are able to sell Chardonnay at a very low price point, with a nice bottle probably setting you back less than ?6. This is because the grape used to produce it is a very low maintenance one, reducing the growing and production costs of the wine. As with most wines, there is a wide range of tones, ranging from citrus through to buttery oak.

Pinot Grigio

The favourite wine to come out of Italy, Pinot Grigio is produced in Friuli and also Veneto in the north of Italy and is a crisp, very light, refreshing wine. Pinot Grigio has a very smooth silky flavour to it with hints of pear and melon, to drink it when it is at its best you should drink it early instead of leaving it to age. This white wine is quite acidic and would normally be paired with seafood, pasta or cheese.

Pinot Blanc

This white wine is typically a dry to medium dry wine from the Alsace region of France and also Hungary, Italy and Germany. Pinot Blanc is a lighter wine, usually carrying a melon, pear, apricot or citrus flavour. Due to the light flavours in Pinot Blanc it is ideal for drinking with a light meat or mild cheese dish.

Riesling

Originating from Mosel and Rhein river valleys, Germany, this wine has grown in popular quite recently. There are many wines which claim to be Riesling, however the only two “genuine” Riesling wines which are Johannisberg and White Riesling as these are the only two made using the Riesling grape. This wine stretches over a whole range of wines, covering everything from dry to sweet. They are commonly a fruity wine with aromas of peach, pear and apple. Perfect for drinking with most meals from pork and poultry through to spicy asian foods.

Sauvignon Blanc

Two different types of the Sauvignon Blanc are available, the original which was grown in France and a version which was exported to New Zealand. A light crisp white wine which is perfect when paired with salads or dishes with lots of vegetables in.
