Guide To Wine Port Wines

Port wine is something that every wine enthusiast and connoisseur knows to admire and appreciate. This type of wine is made of grapes harvested in a particular great year for growing the grapes. Such years are always mentioned on the bottle of the Port wine and these bottles are darn expensive to get!

In order to get its vintage quality, the wine needs to be properly stored and allowed for it to mature in bottles for many years or decades before it can be consumed. Vintage port was not always available, and the ‘vintage’ style has actually been discovered by chance. Before the vintage exceptional type has been discovered, the Port was considered of a moderate quality, with nothing especially great about it.

However now there are wine producers who are striving to beat the previous expectations and are competing for excellence and increased alcoholic strength. There are some exceptional years for vintage port wines, such as the famous 1896, 1904, 1908 or 1912. A bottle of wine obtained from the product make in one of these years is truly a rarity and it commands very high prices.

One of the most important aspects of getting this type of wine correctly is proper aging. It usually reaches its peak maturity when it has been stored for 20 years. Some are great even after these years, but in general this number is a good guideline to follow.

Once the grapes are harvested and the port is produced, it is kept for aging in wooden casks and it is checked for quality on a regular basis by following a sample tasting. After approximately 16 months it is checked whether it is of enough good quality to become a candidate for a vintage port. If it is so, then it is submitted to be approved as a candidate as a real vintage port wine. There is a Port Wine Institute that has experts as members who can declare the wine as vintage if the quality is met. Once it is cleared as such, the actual producer can go ahead and declare their wine vintage. And then it can finally be decanted using a good quality decanter such as the Gemini wine decanter. Port wine is best consumed drinking from crystal wine goblets.
