what is the significance of an airlock in making wine?

well i have this kit called “spike your juice” it contains an rubber gasket (the only part really needed from the kid asides from the instructions), a airlock that can be puchased on ebay, and yeast. well i was just wondering what the signigfinicance of the airlock is? i know it only lets gases out. meaning there is only carbon dioxide inside the container because the liquid is letting it out. but if i were to take it out what would happen? or even just an index card over the top?

Karen is correct, you cannot skip having the airlock. During the fermentation process, the gases build up, and the air-lock allows the gasses to escape, but because you have water in the lock, it’s prevents any air coming back into your tank. No an index card will not do this, since the fermentation process produces gasses over along period of time, you want something in place to allow the to escape. You don’t just need to find it on e-bay, surely there is a home brew store in your area you can pick one up at. Check around, and good luck on your first batch.
