wine lights set
Christmas lights photography?

I live in Nor Cal, wine country. Around here there are lots of streets with magnificent Christmas lights on houses and buildings. At night, the town looks like a picture from a fairy tail.
I would like to capture these on my digital Camera. I have a hp Photosmart R817, 5.1 Mega pixels. I can set the F-stop, Aperture and ISO independently. I also have a tripod.
What settings should I use on my camera in order to get nice, clear photos of those decorations at night? Thank you
fantastic answers everyone! I will try them out this WE and let you know how things turned out

To give a specific answer, I agree with Chaz and Snuffy. Here’s a shot I tried tonight using the “Fireworks” setting on my Canon SD950-IS. I think it worked out pretty well. Why wouldn’t it? The parameters are pretty much the same. It would have been better with a tripod, but I didn’t set out to find some lights to photograph. I just happened to pass this display.

Christmas Lights

Fireworks on the SD950-IS sets the camera at:
Exposure: 2 sec (2)
Aperture: f/8
ISO Speed: Auto

In this case, it chose ISO 80, because there are so many lights.

If you want to go full manual, you would probably make out okay with:
Exposure: 1 or 2 seconds
Aperture: f/5.6 or f/8 – for adequate depth of field
ISO Speed: 100
Tripod and self-timer or remote release

Each display will require a different time, depending on the number and brightness of the lights. I would stick to a low ISO to avoid noise, as mentioned above.
