What is a descent bottle of wine, for a wine tasting party?

My wife is going to a wine tasting party and wants to take a bottle and ask me for my thoughts, I dont drink wine so could not help her, but maybe someone here can. Please can someone recommend a brand, type, year, i need to know where to get started.

Does the tasting party have a theme? Because it would kind of be a faux pas to show up with, say, a bottle of white when the party theme is all reds, or a bottle of zinfandel when the theme is pinot grigio. That being said, I tend to keep to this general idea: don’t go too expensive OR too cheap (no Two-buck Chuck), look for something interesting (maybe a smaller producer, or a less well known area, like a Michigan wine if you’re out on the west coast), keep an open mind, and don’t be offended or disappointed if nobody likes the wine (including you).
