In the old days in Europe (Pre 1800s), they drank wine all the time, if they were thirsty. How come Not drunk?

All people used to drink wine all the time, at meals and when they were just generally thirsty.

If I was really thirsty, I could not drink a tall glass of wine. Yet from reading different novels, it appears that this is what they did because wine was the only beverage that did not spoil back before refrigerators were invented. So were people constantly drunk?
Was wine, as we know it today, more alcoholic than wine from the Pre-1800′s?

The water was bad in most towns because sanitary conditions didn’t exist. People and animals went to the bathroom in the streets.

So with bad water everywhere, they drank a lot of wine because it was more pure. The alcohol content may have been lower, but if you imbibed every day, the effects wouldn’t be as great. There was medicinal reasons to drink wine as well. It helped digest nasty stuff that they ate.
