Wine stopper that vacuums out air?

I enjoy a glass of wine from time to time. However, it goes “off” so quickly that I rarely drink it at home. I seem to remember years ago there being a wine bottle stopper that had a pump on it that removed the air from the bottle, thereby keeping the wine fresh. I can’t seem to find one. Anyone know what I’m talking about and where to get one?

There are 2 or 3 brands of these stoppers on the market. Each one includes one or more stoppers for the bottle, and a compatible vacuum pump to pump out the air after you insert the stopper. The pump from any one brand of stopper will not work on the other brands.

The best known of these is called “Vac-U-Vin.” I think the basic kit – one pump & 1 or 2 stoppers – sells for around $10 in the USA.

Their advertising says that it will keep wine for oxidizing for two weeks. Three to five days would be more accurate. To further slow down oxidation after pumping out as much air as possible, keep the bottle in the refrigerator. If it’s a red, then you’ll need to bring it out let it warm to room temperature before you pour another glass.

If you consume very little wine, you might seek out wines that you like that come in 375ml bottles (called “half bottles”). They hold half the volume of a 750ml bottle, and the standard vacuum stoppers fit these bottles, too (because they use the same size cork as a standard bottle).

I’ll add that magnums (1.5 liter) and larger bottles use larger diameter corks, so their necks are, in nearly all cases, too large to use the vacuum pump stoppers.
