Wine Tasting Parties

Wine tasting parties are becoming popular around the country.  Friends, family and wine club members are coming together to sample local wines while being in good company.  Wine tasting parties originally started out at wineries then liquor stores began to have wine tasting days so their customers could sample. Now individuals are planning parties in their own homes.  The party can concentrate on red, blush or white wines only or they can offer a mixture of all types of wines.  Food is prepared to be tasted with the wine so that the full flavor of the wine can be enjoyed.  Food pairing is also a great learning experience for your guests.

When planning your wine party you should keep your list of guests to a minimum.  On average a normal bottle of wine will serve three people.  Although you will only be tasting the wine in small sips your company will want to drink the wines that they liked after the tasting is over.  After you have your invitation list with the names of the guests you would like to attend it’s time to do the invites.  In most cases if you are inviting family members it is just as easy to invite them over the phone.  If you are inviting friends or members of a wine club a mailing would be a better option.  You could make your own cards or purchase invitations to be mailed.  If you are requesting each guest to bring a bottle of wine to test, as some party givers do, be sure to make this clear on the invitation.

Now is the time to plan what you will be serving at your party.  Decide on the type of wines you will be sampling and make a menu of foods that you want to serve that will best compliment the wines.  White Zinfandel pairs well with chicken, seafood and pork while Merlot tastes excellent with chocolate.  Do your homework to see what foods you will like to serve with each wine.  If you don’t want to go to the extent of preparing dishes you could serve different cheeses or desserts to show which wines go well with each.  No matter what you decide to serve your guests will be thrilled.

When decorating for your party you could use your food as the centerpieces.  You could plate your food and lay down the dishes in the center of the table as a runner.  Another option that is attractive is to purchase a a box of inexpensive wine glasses and turn them upside down and build a tier.  Add small fruits around the glasses to make a delicious eye catching centerpiece.  There are inexpensive chocolate fountains on the market that would be great for dipping the fruit or you could serve an array of fondues instead.  Chill your wines to the correct temperatures that they should be served at on the day of your party.  If you are creative you could make wine charms to place along the stem of inexpensive wine glasses that your guests could take home with them at the end of the evening.

Your home is decorated and the food is prepared and laid out for your party.  All of your preparations are done and your guests will be arriving in any minute.  Turn on some soft music, take a deep breath and get ready to enjoy yourself with good wine, food and people.
