Liquor Decanter? Different kinds?!?!? gift help!!?

I need to find a liquor decanter. Are there different kinds style wise? this isn’t for wine. He usually drinks whiskey or rum. Does it need to have a cork that seals or just a glass topper? Help!?

Whiskey or rum decanters actually serve only a “form” purpose and no true “function.” They’re there to look pretty, add some pizazz to your home/office/wherever, and perhaps for ease of pouring (though most decanters are actually harder to pour from than a bottle).

Thus, the choice is basically by your taste — it’s sort of like asking, “What are the right plates to serve my steaks on?” You could say, well a nice, plain, white china plate will contrast with the steaks nicely… but that’s just preference.

The seal should just be a tight one. Whiskey that stays open to the air too much (as in, it gets lots of fresh air over a few months) will begin to lose its flavor.

My personal suggestion is to buy your giftee a pricey bottle of rum or whisky _instead_ of the decanter. But it’s just my opinion… I always say that decanting whiskey does nothing except show that someone understood their bottle poorly enough to want to remove their whiskey from it. Whiskey aficionados usually want to see the _bottle_. I know a lot of them — we’re the guys at http://www.lawhiskeysociety.com/

On a minor note, crystal decanters often contain lead… booze leaches lead out of the crystal… yeah.
