Sonoma Wine Tours | Napa Valley Wine Tours | Elite Limousine
The Sonoma Valley Wine Region — though not quite as well known as its famous Napa Valley neighbor to the east – is a world-class wine region in its own right, producing some of the finest wines available.
The valley has been growing grapes for as long as Europeans have been there. The early
Spanish missionaries were the first to plant primitive vineyards so they could produce their own sacramental wines. Then in the 1830′s when General Mariano Vallejo received large land grants
in the area, he continued the tradition, expanding and cultivating his own vineyards. But it
wasn’t until the late 1850′s that the art and science of wine growing came together in the valley
and the local wine industry was born.
It was then that a Hungarian immigrant, Agoston Haraszthy, convinced the new state of
California to send him on an inspection tour of Europe to study the methods of the French and Italian growers. What he saw convinced him that Sonoma Valley’s red, gravelly soil was perfect
for growing grapes whose wines could one day rival the finest Europe had to offer. Upon his
return, he helped found Sonoma’s Buena Vista winery and other wineries soon followed. By
1876 the valley was producing more than 2.3 million gallons of wine a year.
The Sonoma Valley Wine Region is actually comprised of five distinct sub-regions: Alexander Valley, Dry Creek Valley, Russian River Valley, the Los Carneros District, and of course the
Sonoma Valley. The region is a mix of thick forested hills, beautiful green valleys and lazy
winding rivers. The scenery itself is reason enough to visit this beautiful area, but toss in some
of the world’s finest wineries and you’ve got a day trip that just can’t miss.
Some of the better know local wineries include: Buena Vista, Chateau St. Jean, Glen Ellen, Kenwood, Sebastiani, Kendall-Jackson, Dry Creek, Geyser Peak, Korbel, Rodney Strong, Silver Oaks, Simi Winery and Windsor Vineyards.
