Need help in GA/FL area for travel…Savannah?

My husband and I are in the Jacksonville area and want a nice getaway that is only a few hours away. We are thinking Savannah,GA for a B&B or something just as charming like a cottage. We liked this resort that offered horseback riding and picnics, a beer garden, bicycling, a wine and appetizer hour, golf, and fishing but it was too far away http://www.barnsleyresort.com/stay/accommodations/accommodations.asp (just to give you an idea of our interests.) We like theatre, wine/beer, food, and anything off the beaten path so we are open to suggestions. We are not dead set on Savannah but like the historical and artsy aspect of it. If anybody could suggest a place in GA, SC, or even FL that is not loaded with touristy crap and overpriced typical services. If you are familiar with Savannah please fill me in on things to do or stay. We appreciate everybodys imput.

Savannah is a good choice if you’ve never been there, and I doubt you’ll find anyplace more interesting that close. Once you’ve seen it, if you are willing to drive a couple of hours more, Sarasota might warrant a look-see in May or November (no snowbirds). It has an art college too and tends to be fairly artsy – considerable more theatre than Savannah, a number of golf courses plus the other things you mentioned. It does fail in comparison as far as historic architecture is concerned, although it does have John Ringling’s mansion on the bay (and the museum).

Back to Savannah: I split a week between there and Charleston a couple of years ago and was surprised that Charleston was lacking in the theatre department. On the other hand, I found B&Bs in Savannah to be more expensive, and not all that conveniently located (I like to be able to walk to most everything). The historic Planter’s Inn was cheaper and in a great location (plus 20% discount for 45 day advance booking). If you go with a chain, you can even spend less – but watch out for extra $$ for parking.

Everyone plans to eat at Paula Deen’s but, before Paula, there was Mrs Wilkes and there are those who say it’s better. As for other places to eat, there’s plenty of places down on the riverfront – just Google Map savannah restaurants for the low down.
